Data & AI Engineer

Anthony Durand

I connect data, AI and business needs, and turn ideas into simple, useful solutions.

Summary

I’m a curious and motivated engineer. I enjoy finding smart and practical ways to connect technology, user needs, and sustainability.

From hands-on projects in France to my final-year internship in Shenzhen, China, and now Brussels, I’ve learned how to work across cultures, improve operations, and manage projects effectively. Today at CBTW, I work at the crossroads of data, AI and business functions: I build end-to-end data & BI solutions for the group’s management and experiment with internal AI use cases.

Outside of work, I’m always learning. I love discovering new technologies, exploring different fields, and working on creative projects like photography. I especially enjoy linking systems together to make daily life easier, and turning ideas into simple, useful solutions.

I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious.

    Workflow optimisation

    NextPool Millau, France

5-week group project (team of 3), focused on improving the communication flows of a company.

We analyzed and optimized inter- and intra-departmental workflows, identifying bottlenecks and communication gaps. I contributed to the development of an automated Excel-based tool that streamlined several key communication processes between departments. This hands-on project helped me understand how poor internal communication can affect efficiency on an organizational level.

Beyond the technical aspect, this experience was personally enriching. I lived in a shared house with five other students, including two from Mauritania, which led to some great intercultural moments and lifelong memories.

    Construction worker intern

    TSVAR Saint-Raphaël, France

As part of my first year at IMT Mines Alès, I completed a one-month manual internship on a construction site. The objective was to step into the shoes of a worker in order to better understand the physical conditions and realities of fieldwork, an essential experience to develop empathy and respect for those we will later supervise from office roles.

During this internship, I actively participated in tasks such as concrete pouring, masonry, and structural assembly. This hands-on exposure gave me valuable insight into the challenging conditions faced daily by site workers, including physical strain, repetitive tasks, and strict safety constraints.

    Dimensioning intern

    La Parqueterie Nîmes, France

A 5-week field project, in a group of three, conducted for the company La Parqueterie.

The objective was to design and size an innovative solar carport. We performed structural calculations and finite element analysis using CATIA to assess mechanical resistance. The project included technical feasibility studies, comparison of multiple design options, and iterative improvements. In the end, we proposed three technically functional solutions adapted to the company’s needs.

10-week engineering research internship focused on the design and dimensioning of an experimental setup for the International Space Station (ISS), investigating convective condensation in microgravity.

This project was a unique opportunity for me to explore the world of research, a field I had always been curious about. Working in a laboratory environment, surrounded by experts, was both inspiring and intellectually stimulating. I conducted thermal and fluidic calculations, developed physical models, and designed the full experiment architecture in CATIA. I also learned to use LaTeX to write technical documents and reports, a tool I now use regularly. Curiosity & personal journey

The birth of a scientific mindset

Since I was very young, I’ve been driven by a simple question: why? Why is the sky blue, why do things fall, why do stars shine? When I was 14, on a summer night, I was outside alone and looked up at the stars. I thought it looked beautiful and asked myself, “What is that?” I downloaded an astronomy app, discovered constellations, then planets. A few weeks later, I learned that we could even see galaxies from Earth. I was amazed. A passion was born.

Little by little, I got into astronomy, then astrophysics. I watched dozens of videos, read books, and followed science talks. Exploring the universe taught me to see the world differently. This passion also made me want to become an engineer.

Naturally, like many amateur astronomers, I wanted to take pictures of what I saw. I didn’t know anything about photography, so I taught myself how to use exposure, ISO, white balance and lens settings, and then learned about the flats, darks, and offsets used in astrophotography. In the end, I created an Instagram account where I share around ten pictures of stars and galaxies I captured.

On summer nights, being alone under the sky or watching a science video while waiting for a celestial object to appear in my lens, it’s a feeling like no other.

This passion opened new doors for me. At engineering school, I joined the photo and video club EMA Visual, and later became its vice president. I photographed more than 30 major school events (over 4,000 photos), growing both my technical skills and my ability to lead a team and shape a shared artistic vision.

From photography to video

My love for images led me to explore video, especially shooting in LOG with the iPhone. I had to learn about color science, color grading, and color profiles… and I discovered a whole new world: cinema.

I started analyzing films: the shots, the lighting, the storytelling. Today, I see cinema with both a technical and emotional eye, shaped by science.

Technology & autonomy: my personal lab

During my studies, I learned how to model in 3D using CATIA V5. Very quickly, it became more than just a school assignment. I bought a 3D printer and started designing my own objects to make daily life easier: mounts, holders, organizers, adapters… Each idea took shape on the screen, then came out of the printer: real, tangible, and useful.

It was fascinating: with a bit of logic, precision, and method, I could go from a simple need to a physical object, completely on my own. This passion for practical creation pushed me to go further.

I’ve also always loved understanding how things work. So, I built a home server from scratch using a Raspberry Pi. This project, born from the desire to optimize my everyday life, led me to:

  • Manage my smart devices
  • Set up a personal cloud (NAS) for my files
  • Control my 3D printer with OctoPrint
  • Configure VPN, Docker, and automation scripts

Through this, I learned about Linux, file systems, permissions, logs, network ports, and containers. A full-stack experience, from the physical layer to system logic.

Apple

I’m passionate about the Apple ecosystem. I don’t just watch every keynote; I spend hours watching videos, breaking down the designs, understanding the choices behind each product, and learning how everything fits together.

What I admire most is how Apple builds things that just make sense. Everything works together, everything has a purpose. It’s not just about technology, it’s about creating tools that feel natural and easy to use.

That’s what I try to do as well. I love building systems, connecting things, and making everyday life easier through smart design. Apple’s way of thinking (clean, useful, elegant) really matches how I see engineering.

The uncertain world of finance

Recently, in a very different field, I decided to explore finance. Coming from a background in hard sciences, I found it confusing at first. Where astronomy is based on laws and evidence, finance blends uncertainty, opinions, and trends.

I read, watched, compared… and realized one thing: to make sense of it, you need rigor, patience, and a scientific mindset.

This journey gave me a new kind of curiosity: how to bring structure to complexity in a field where few things are truly certain.
